Google Still Allowing Third-Party Apps Read Your Gmail: Report September 21, 2018 11:55

After going through a backlash over reports in July that third-party app developers can read your Gmail, Google has over again defended its policy to allow third-party apps to access and share data from Gmail accounts.According to a CNNMoney report on Thursday, Gmail allows third-party developers to integrate services into its email platform."Developers may share data with third parties so long as they are transparent with the users about how they are using the data," said the report, quoting from a Google letter sent to the United States Senators.Google as well makes "the privacy policy easily accessible to users to review before deciding whether to grant access", said Susan Molinari, Vice President of Public Policy and Government Affairs for the Americas at Google, in the letter. In July, the Wall Street Journal reported that despite assuring users to "remain confident that Google will keep privacy and security paramount", the search giant is still letting third-party app developers scan through Gmail accounts.Gmail has about 1.4 billion users worldwide - more users than the next 25 sizable email providers combined.Later, Google said in a blog post that the company is endlessly vetting developers and their apps that incorporate with Gmail before it opens them for broad access.According to Google, it gives both enterprise admins and individual consumers transparency and control over how their data is used."We make it possible for applications from other developers to integrate with Gmail - like email clients, trip planners and Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems - so that you have options around how you access and use your email," said Suzanne Frey, Director, Security, Trust and Privacy, Google Cloud. It said that before a published, non-Google app can access your Gmail messages, it goes through a multi-step review process at the company, it said."It includes an automated and manual review of the developer, assessment of the app's privacy policy and homepage to ensure it is a legitimate app, and in-app testing to ensure the app works as it says it does," Frey noted. In 2017, Google had said its computers will shortly stop reading the emails of its Gmail users to personalize their ads.By Sowmya Sangam

Kim Seeks Second Summit with Trump, Says Moon September 21, 2018 07:38

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has requested a second summit with the United States President Donald Trump and also wants the U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to visit Pyongyang shortly, according to South Korea's president.Speaking at a news conference upon his return to Seoul on Thursday, Moon Jae-in said Kim told him during his three-day summit in Pyongyang that he wanted to hasten the process of denuclearization."Kim Jong-un expressed his wish that he wanted to complete denuclearisation quickly and focus on economic development," Moon said."He said he hoped Mike Pompeo would visit North Korea soon, and also the second summit with Trump would take place in the near future, in order to move the denuclearisation process along quickly."He also said he would carry a private message from Kim for Trump when he meets the U.S. president in New York City next week at the United Nations General Assembly.Related content: Donald trump and Kim Jong Un finally agrees for Historic signingMoon will also convey to Trump both his and Kim's desire to obtain a declaration ending the Korean War by the end of this year, he said.U.S. ConcessionsAsked about the specific corresponding U.S. measures demanded by Kim for denuclearisation, Moon said the matter should be discussed between North Korea and the U.S."Pyongyang joint declaration did not include any of those specific measures of North Korea and the corresponding actions of the U.S. We discussed some of it, but we did not have it written down so I cannot reveal any of the discussed items with you here," he said.Al Jazeera's Rob McBride, reporting from Seoul, said Moon's speech gave an impression that he knows very well what Kim wants to receive from the U.S. in return for the closure of its main Yongbyon nuclear complex."But he is not revealing that at all, saying he has a role of a mediator. The takeaway that we have so far is that (the situation) is very much in line with what we have expected. North Koreans are not going to act unilaterally, unconditionally. They are going to expect at every level some concessions from the U.S.," he said.Singapore MeetingKim and Trump held a milestone and prominent meeting in Singapore in June, where the North's leader committed to working towards denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, but then no details were agreed.By Sowmya Sangam

Trump Defends U.S. Supreme Court Nominee Accused of Sexual Assault September 20, 2018 07:51

The United States President Donald Trump has defended his Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, whose confirmation has been imperiled by accusations of sexual assault. "Justice Kavanaugh has been treated very, very tough, and his family. I think it's a very unfair thing what's going on," Trump told reporters on Tuesday. A university professor Kavanaugh's accuser has said she was assaulted at a party 36 years ago when both were high school students. She was 15 then and Kavanaugh was 17. The hearing has been processed by Republicans, who control the Senate and Kavanaugh's confirmation process, for the professor and Trump's nominee and scheduled on Monday. However, the prof has demanded a Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) inquiry into her allegations before she testifies, changing her earlier offer to testify. "An FBI investigation of the incident should be the first step in addressing her allegations," the professor's attorney, Debra Katz, said in a letter to Chuck Grassley, the Republican senator who heads the senate judiciary committee. Related content: Brett Kavanaugh Denies Sexual Misconduct Allegation Katz as well wrote that since the professor went open with her accusations, she has been a "target of vicious harassment and even death threats. As a result of these kinds of threats, her family was forced to relocate out of their home". The professor's demand for an FBI inquiry before her testimony echoes a demand by the Democrats, who have also opposed the Monday hearing. They argue the allegations must be investigated so that the committee members have the full facts before they consider the accusations and Kavanaugh's denials. But Republicans, even those who had argued for the confirmation process to be slowed down to hear the accuser, are saying that if she does not testify on Monday, the procedure should be advanced to the next stage - a ballot of the committee and then the full Senate chamber. "Units had extensive issues with extinguishing the fire because of the volume," Douglas said. #DCsBravest continue to evacuate the residents of 2 alarm fire 900 5th St SE.
