After Amazon, Now Wayfair Found to Sell Bath Mats with Hindu Deities May 18, 2019 05:36

Days after Hindus expressed an outcry about online retail giant Amazon for selling bath mats and toilet seat covers with images of Hindu gods, another website has been found to be selling similar products. Wayfair.com, the United States e-commerce company that sells home goods, has been selling bath mats with not just Lord Ganesha images but also mats with Lord Shiva imprints on it.Sold on the website amid a range of religious figures, wall decor and statues are also some bath rugs described on the website as, “Yoga Asian Lord with Third Eye Bath Rug by East Urban Home,” and “Asian Face of Elephant Lord Bath Rug.”The products, sold on the website for $38 and more, are found to be derogatory.Headquartered in Boston, Wayfair is one of the popular online destinations for home goods shopping.Despite the fact that the United States an abode for a growing number of Hindu immigrants, mostly from India, often Hindu religious icons and cultural symbols are mistakenly used for lifestyle products. In the past, too, there were complaints about Wayfair selling the Hindu Gods imprinted bath rugs.Last year, Wayfair removed a cutting board carrying the image of Ganesha and apologized after Hindu activists protested against it.Many South Asians point out that often issues such as these arise as many Americans, taken with the trend of Yoga, mistakenly associate Hindu religious symbols as something that can be used as a lifestyle expression. While Hinduism does not prohibit the usage of Gods and Goddesses figurines for decorative purposes, the idea of using the pictures of revered deities on something like a bath rug is a repulsive thought for most Hindus.By Sowmya Sangam

Donald Trump Wants U.S.-Mexico Border Wall Painted Black with Spikes May 18, 2019 04:41

President Donald Trump wants the wall along the Mexican border, which he proposed, to be made of steel with spikes and painted black to make it difficult for immigrants to climb, according to a media report. Trump recently told White House aide, Homeland Security officials and military engineers that the steel bollard should be painted “flat black”, a dark hue that would absorb heat in the summer, making the metal too hot for climbers to ascend. Further President Trump insisted that the tips of the bollard should be pointed and not round. He described in graphic terms the potential injuries that border crossers might receive, The Washington Post said in a report on Thursday. Trump told one group of aides that the metal points would cut the hands of climbers and function as a more effective deterrent. The President has said the wall's current blueprints include too many gates - placed at periodic intervals to allow vehicles and people through - and he wants the openings to be smaller. At the point in time when the White House is diverting billions of dollars in military funds to fast-track building, the President is micro-managing the project down to the smallest design details, according to current and former administration officials. But Trump's frequently shifting instructions and suggestions have left engineers and aides confused, they added. Trump has demanded Department of Homeland Security officials come to the White House on short notice to talk about wall construction and on several occasions woke former Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen to discuss the project in the early morning, The Post quoted the officials as saying.Trump also has repeatedly summoned the head of the United States Army Corps of Engineers, Lt. Gen. Todd T. Semonite, to impart his views on the barrier's properties, demanding that the structure be physically imposing but also aesthetically pleasing. The President, who repeatedly promised to force Mexico to pay for his desired border wall, has declared to build 400 miles of new barriers by next year, a goal he reiterated during an immigration speech at the White House on Thursday afternoon.By Sowmya Sangam

Build America Visa: Trump’s New Policy to Replace Existing Green Card System May 17, 2019 12:24

President Donald Trump has unveiled the "Build America Visa" program, which would replace the existing Green Card system. The proposed change is part of the new merit and points-based immigration system, which would rejig the current procedure of entering the United States and availing the country's citizenship.Build America VisaAccording to President Trump, the ‘Build America Visa’ would do away with the perils of Green Card, which he said "was unfair" to genuine citizenship aspirants. The new policy will only give credence to skill and merit, as opposed to nepotism, place of birth, relatives in the United States and other "discriminatory" factors.Trump claimed the afoot system allows those with blood relations, along with asylum seekers, to emerge as the biggest beneficiary of the visa program. The Green Card is also unfair as it is based upon "random chance", the President added, referring to the lottery system used in the selection of some aspirants.Contrary to that, the Build America policy will provide a fair chance, welcoming as many immigrants as permitted under the current framework but the only criteria being skills and merit."The biggest change we make is to increase the proportion of highly skilled immigration from 12 percent to 57 percent and we would like to even see if we can go higher," Trump said. The President added that the Build American program is based on "easy-to-navigate points-based", which is used by Canada and number of other European nations to select migrants based on their skillset, economic value, and resourcefulness."You will get more points for being a younger worker, meaning you will contribute more to our social safety net. You will get more points for having a valuable skill, an offer of employment, an advanced education, or a plan to create jobs," he said.Trump said the new immigration system will also secure-entry level jobs for Americans. "Our immigration system should bring in people who will expand opportunity for striving, low-income Americans, not to compete with those low-income Americans," Trump said, saying that the pleas of only those migrants in middle-to-high income groups will be admitted.By Sowmya Sangam

Benefits of Eating with Your Hands May 17, 2019 12:00

If you have ever visited India you would have certainly come across people eating with their hands and not with cutlery. In India, as well as some of the parts of the world, eating with your hands is part of the culture. Though many may view this custom as uncivilized, the practice is not as easy as it may look. There is, in fact, a skill to it and manners to follow. Besides, there are also several health benefits from eating with your hands such as improves digestion and prevention of diabetes. According to Indian culture, there’s also an even deep significance as to why eating with your hands is so important. Why Eating with Hands Is Healthy? According to Ayurveda  The practice of eating with the hands originated within Ayurvedic teachings. The Vedic people believed that our bodies are in sync with the elements of nature and our hands hold a certain power. Ayurvedic texts teach that each finger is an extension of one of the five elements:- Through the thumb comes space- Through the forefinger comes air- Through the mid-finger comes fire- Through the ring finger comes water - Through the pinky finger comes earthWhen you eat with your hands, you are supposed to do so by joining all fingers together which is believed to better our consciousness of the taste of the food we eat. Not only are you feeding your body but also your mind and spirit. When you touch your food with your hands, you’re creating a physical and spiritual connection with it. You’re also much more present at the moment. When food is touched with the hands, there’s automatically more careful attention placed on it - what the temperature is, how much you can carry, how the hand must be held in order to keep the food in it. However, there’s a technique of eating with hands. In the south of India, it’s considered ill-mannered to let the palm of your hands or outside of your fingers get stained. As per rules, one has to only use the tips of your fingers to pick up the food. This goes back to our fingertips holding certain energies. Health Benefits of Eating with Hands   Promotes Mindful Eating Eating with hands requires you to be fully present. And a calm, aware state of mind allows optimum digestion and helps with not overeating. When you eat with your fingers you feel more connected with your food. Not only does mindful eating amend the assimilation of nutrients from the food you eat, but also enhances digestion and makes you leave the table with a serene state of mind.Improves DigestionWhen you touch the food with your hands, the millions of nerves endings in your fingers transmit the message to your brain that you’re about to eat. This message is then passed to your stomach, which starts releasing the digestive juices and enzymes that are needed for digestion. In addition to that, nerve endings in your fingers can even sense the temperature and texture of the food you are about to eat and thereby prepare your brain to trigger the release of the appropriate digestive juices and enzymes before the food even meets our lips.Prevents You from Burning Your Palate and TongueOur hands are very effective temperature sensors. When you eat with a fork, the food goes directly from the plate into your mouth, and you may not realize that’s too hot. When you touch your food with hands, the nerve endings on your fingertips direct a temperature reading to the stomach, effectively preventing you from burning your tongue.By Sowmya Sangam

Kamala Harris Invokes Indian Heritage in Response to Trump’s Immigration Plan May 17, 2019 09:44

The first Indian origin Senator Kamala Harris criticized President Donald Trump's merit-based immigration plan saying it was "short-sighted" and invoked her unique background as a Democratic candidate for the White House in 2020. Trump on Thursday proposed an immigration plan that would prioritize high-skilled workers over those who already have relatives in the country when determining who receives green cards. The daughter of an Indian immigrant, Harris, Senator from California, criticized the proposal, which Democratic leaders have vowed to fight, saying that Americans routinely celebrate a "unified culture" and the United States Constitution guarantees equality for all people. "I found the announcement today to be short-sighted," said the 54-year-old California Democrat, slamming the Trump plan before an Asian American audience in Las Vegas. On the plan's intention to award immigrants certain points based on education or skills, Harris said, "We cannot allow people to start parsing and pointing fingers and creating hierarchies among immigrants." "The beauty of the tradition of our country has been to say, when you walk through the door, you are equal. We spoke those words in 1776, 'we are all equal' and should be treated that way. Not, oh well, if you come from this place, you might only have a certain number of points, and if you come from that place you might have a different number of points." Asians have historically immigrated as family units, Harris pointed out. The first South Asian-American United States senator in history, Kamala, whose mother is Indian and her father is Jamaican Harris said that breaking barriers was more than about personal achievement as she eyed becoming the first woman commander-in-chief. "It's about making a statement about who can do what and redefining images about who can do what and how they do it," she said. Trump and others have "perverted" the issue of immigration, Harris added, as she echoed her call for a pathway to citizenship. She noted how as California attorney general she had alerted county sheriffs that they were not required to comply with detainer requests by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. In a lighthearted moment, an audience member asked Harris if she would commit to wearing a traditional Indian garment to her inauguration, known as a sari. "Let's first win," Harris said, smiling. "My mother raised us with a very strong appreciation for our cultural background and pride. Celebrations that we all participate in regardless of how our last name is spelled. It's the beauty of who we are as a nation." Harris on every occasion includes stories about how her mother, Shyamala Gopalan, impacted every aspect of her life. And while she has spoken about visits to India during her book tour, Harris on the trail has leaned far more into the African American identity her mother raised her to embrace. By Sowmya Sangam
